Geneon Universal Entertainment is a Japanese home entertainment company and subsidiary of NBC Universal that deals mostly with the distribution of music, movies and anime. They hold the domestic rights to the Generation 1 cartoon and its sequels, including The Transformers: The Movie, and the various Beast Wars series.

Geneon Universal was founded in 1981 as the Pioneer Laserdisc Company, a sub-division of the Pioneer Electronics Corporation who had recently acquired a majority share in the Laserdisc format. The company was renamed as Geneon Entertainment when it was sold to Dentsu Incorporated in July 2003, and in February 2009 was merged with Universal Pictures Japan to become Geneon Universal Entertainment.

The Pioneer-era Laserdisc and DVD sets are given their Western titles (e.g. The Transformers instead of Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers) to better appeal to an international audience. In addition, the Beast Wars and Beast Wars: Metals sets also feature the original English audio alongside the Japanese. The Generation 1 sets also feature English audio tracks, but only on select episodes.

Each box set came with additional special features, such as toy commercials and the occasional OVA or television special. Each set also included a booklet containing character models, bios and a trivia guide written by Hirofumi Ichikawa.
